Susan Chappelear uses her own deep power of empathy to create this entrancing tale. Skyler and five other middle schoolers navigate the relational and emotional challenges of early adolescence. Ms. M teaches them coping skills and helps them explore new ways of seeing the world. All the while, healing their broken hearts.

I loved getting to know Skyler and the gang. Does anyone feel okay about themselves in middle school?! This book opens the door for young readers to understand that the answer to that is probably “no” and that is okay, even typical. The idea of a welcoming club and an understanding “and magical” teacher to guide Skyler and the gang through this tough time is so enjoyable to read. Great lessons here about leaning and life.

I am Char’s Uncle. Char is in sixth grade. She is on the Autism spectrum and is almost finished reading Skyler and the Moonstone Medallions. She commented to my sister, “Mommy, this book is really good at teaching me some different ways of calming down when I’m feeling overwhelmed.”

A powerful, imaginative story with heart. Skyler and the Moonstone Medallions is a beautifully written coming-of-age story that blends imagination with emotional depth. Through relatable characters and engaging storytelling, it explores resilience, belonging, self-awareness, and the quiet strength it takes to navigate growing up. A meaningful read for young readers—and equally powerful for adults who value empathy, courage, and inner growth. Highly recommended.

Skyler and the Moonstone Medallions is a quietly powerful story that captures the emotional reality of growing up with rare honesty and care. Rather than simply portraying the challenges of childhood, the book offers a compassionate exploration of resilience, identity, and the inner work it takes to navigate friendship, difference, and self-worth. What sets this story apart is its authenticity. The emotions feel lived-in and truthful, reflecting experiences many young readers carry but struggle to name—feeling different, being misunderstood, making mistakes, and learning how to repair what matters. The narrative never talks down to its audience, instead, it meets readers with respect, empathy, and warmth. Beyond its emotional depth, the book provides meaningful value. It gently builds emotional intelligence, encourages self-reflection, and reinforces the importance of empathy, accountability, and courage. Skyler and the Moonstone Medallions is a story that doesn’t just resonate, it supports, empowers, and stays with readers long after the final page.

Skyler and the Moonstone Medallions is a wonderful and imaginative read. My daughter really enjoyed this book and stayed engaged from beginning to end, which doesn’t always happen easily. The story is creative, easy to follow, and full of adventure, while still being age-appropriate and positive. I loved that the characters are relatable and that the book encourages curiosity, bravery, and imagination. It’s the kind of story that keeps kids wanting to read “just one more chapter.” As a parent, I appreciate books like this that spark a love for reading without relying on overly complex language or inappropriate themes. I would absolutely recommend this book to other parents looking for a fun, wholesome story for their child. We’ll definitely be looking for more books like this!

This book is a triumph! It’s a coming-of-age story that reminds me of the deep need everyone has to belong, to be understood, and to have purpose in life. For some people, these things come easily. For others, not so much. The plot follows a group of kids, each of whom is broken by personal tragedy. They feel isolated, overwhelmed, and desperate for help. Then a mysterious drama teacher, Ms. M., invites the students to form a club. Through a series of adventures, she shows her scholars how to apply the ‘magical’ powers of six medallions to deal with life’s challenges. Equipped with these new ‘powers’, the kids endeavor to achieve what Ms. M calls ‘the smooth’ (inner peace and contentment). Along the way, the students forge friendships and adopt techniques that enhance their coping, interpersonal, and other life skills. Through this story, Susan Chappelear offers a great deal of wisdom and practical steps for people who feel stuck or overwhelmed by their situation. Here are some of my takeaways from her book:
- Resist being a victim; you may not be able to control your circumstances, but you can control how you respond to them.
- Don’t wallow in self-pity. Seek calmness and clarity before you act. Then make the decision to engage with others positively.
- Find contentment through gratitude and purpose through service.
- Fulfillment comes when we focus on helping others.
- Pursue what you’re passionate about.
These insights offer a framework for reevaluating how to improve the way we perceive, process, and respond to challenges in our environment. They also help us determine how we will move forward by realigning priorities, pursuing passions, and discovering opportunities that can empower us to be our best. I LOVED IT !!

Strategic Coach and author John Chappelear's book "The Daily Six" provided a valuable methodology for achieving success and satisfaction in business and in life. And now, in this young adult novel, "Skyler and the Moonstone Medallions," his wife, Susan Chappelear, has creatively repurposed these six valuable principles and behaviors in a story geared towards teens and parents to help them navigate the challenges of this often-difficult period of self-development and self-acceptance.

I just finished this amazing storyline book. I loved the creativity and also the message. Children struggle so hard as they grow, learn and experience the world. This story offers young people the opportunity to understand that they can use behavioral options when things are challenging. The story offers lessons without putting the child down or making the child feel poorly about themselves. I strongly recommend the book and thank the author for her sensitivity and clarity.

A unique coming-of-age quest that changes the hearts and minds of kids and parents alike. I love all the thought, care, and detailed experiences Susan put into this wonderful novel. As the kids learn the powers, Ms. M takes them through a vivid and exciting experience to help them deeply internalize the importance and value of each power. This is a fun, enjoyable read for kids, parents, and people who work with kids. Kids feel seen and empowered when they finish this book, and in control of the powers of the Moonstone Medallions. Positive Message. Great Story!
